Back story - Jeremy and I had just gotten our hair cut. I didn't see him because he was sitting right behind me in a chair. I'm done and am being turned around.
Bonnie - "Wow! You look handsome!"
Jeremy - "Thanks...so do you!"
Slam! against my short hair.
Jerk.

While the use of the word has fallen out of popular culture, "handsome" means the same for a woman as it does for a man. He was trying to tell you that you were pleasing in appearance especially by reason of conformity to ideals of form and proportion.
Should you take such a high compliment so lightly? Cheers, Jeremy!
